MILF men abduct Marawi City police chief
MANILA (UPDATE) – The chief of Marawi City Police in Lanao del Sur province was abducted by suspected Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels on midnight Friday, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.
Col. Glen Macasero, commander of the Philippine Army's 103rd Infantry Brigade, told ANC that around 50 armed men raided the Marawi City Police headquarters to rescue 2 of their detained comrades who were earlier arrested for illegal possession of firearms.
Macasero said the MILF men, believed to be under Abdurahman Macapaar alias "Commander Bravo," abducted Marawi Police chief Supt. Christopher Panapan and shot dead his relative who was in the station.
Among those who carried out the attack was an MILF member who also arrested with the two but was later released.
Macasero said Panapan was brought to the group's camp in Nusa Island in Balindong, Lanao del Sur, based on the information provided by the MILF members of the AdHoc Joint Action Group (AHJAG) and Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH).
The military officer said negotiations are ongoing for the release of the police chief. He said charges may also be filed against the "misguided MILF members" through the joint ceasefire mechanism.
