Over 3,000 gunmen a threat in Maguindanao: Army

SHARIFF AGUAK - The military said Monday over 3,000 armed followers of the Ampatuan clan whose provincial stronghold was placed under martial law after a massacre remain a threat.

"The number would not be less than 3,000," said Lieutenant General Raymundo Ferrer, whose forces took over the southern province of Maguindanao after it was placed under martial law on Friday night.

"These (militiamen) are in hiding with their weapons. They have said they will fight and there are many of them," Ferrer said in a radio interview.

The armed group are followers of the Ampatuan family, which has ruled the province since 2001 and whose leaders are accused of being behind the November 23 massacre of 57 people.

The government said it was forced to impose martial law after Ampatuan forces threatened to attack if the leaders were taken into custody. The martial law declaration was signed 9 p.m. December 4 but formally announced early Saturday morning.

"They managed to slip out some guns and ammunition before martial law," Ferrer said.

"(They) are in a defensive position, and the information we have received is that they are prepared to fight the government."

Thousands of government forces have taken over the province since martial law was imposed.

They have carried out raids on Ampatuan properties and recovered an enormous array of military hardware, including anti-tank weapons and armored personnel carriers.

As of Sunday, 62 people had been arrested, including the clan patriarch Andal Ampatuan Snr and four other clan members.

His son, Andal Ampatuan Jr., was already in a Manila jail and charged with 25 counts of murder even before martial law was imposed.

Police said the murders were carried out to prevent a rival politician, Esmael Mangudadatu, from challenging Ampatuan Jnr for the governor's post in May's election.

Ampatuan Sr. has ruled the province as governor since 2001 and was grooming his son to take his place. Other clan members were appointed to high provincial posts in Maguindanao, an impoverished province of 700,000.

Ferrer conceded the clan was able to maintain a private army because the government had used them in the past to help contain a Muslim separatist rebellion that has left over 150,000 dead since the 1970s.

"The problem was they went beyond government control. The family controlled them and they were used for evil deeds," Ferrer said.

Aaaaaaaaaaah! What a wonderful and beautiful morning when I wake up seeing the whole city was blunketed by snow. It is the first snow storm of the season and it really helps uplift the spirit of Christmas. Ang speaking of Christmas, we Pinoys are very spiritual and feeling more closeness to our loved ones. This beautiful sight this morning had given me an opportunity to reflect and at the same time draw self criticism where I criticize myself for any negative things that I've said or done. And this is what my conscience dictates:

To anyone that I have offended, I owe you an apology. I shouldn't have
responded to name calling with name calling and belittling. Degrading or belittling anyone is not my nature and not my forte. I always respect anyone's opinion and never engage in name calling and personal attacks if we disagree with certain issues. I will not impose my opinion on anyone whose opinion is different from mine. I will still post my comments on issues that I might find interesting and will engage to any healthy discussions. I will not stoop down to that level of name calling, personal attacks, trash talks and any profanities. Let's be civilized in posting and/or responding to comments and be respectful of others. Besides, we all
want a better Philippines and honest politicians. Let's make it happen by setting a good example that despite our differences in our opinions, we are one in our dream to make Philippines a better place to live for all Filipinos. Despite my long absence (OFW in KSU for 8 years and now North America for 20 years), I still call the Philippines my home. Being OFW is not a joke and it's hard for both OFW and his/her family.

Well, I don't know about you guys but it feels Christmas here already.
Actually, I started my countdown since September and the time went by
just like that. So, Have a safe Holiday Season and Peace.

To Mang andoybarrios.....

To end our discussion I am glad to hear something from you: personally I am not mad at you but of what you said: My sentiments are plain and simple: The reality of what is happening out there and the solutions of the problem even it is a big risk for us: The legality is behind everything right there and the Law of the Land must be applied to restored peace even if it is under Martial rule. 1987 constitution is crystally stated that the protection and observation of human rights is at stake and must be prior at all cost. Please stop criticizing people that working out there for justice but please all of us must pray once and for all:
Manong andoy I am sad to say you sorry for saying something if it looks disrespect at your aged. I think you seems like as father of us being a young man but I hope you understand us in one way or another, maybe I am not that the perfect one to argue with you but I hope you can really just imagine that sometimes people were crazy to fight for freedom and justice once and for all as an ordinary citizen. Maybe I am not a master of law because I am a master of business administration but my mind is widely open for the present situation of our country. I am not a pro-admin or an opposition but my position is to take and care of my fellow citizen even I am here in abroad; I am not going to interact the issue but to act of the solution to the problem. Peace!

In addition to you Mr. andoybarrios....

20 years as an OFW is not realistic of being a Filipino to stay longer on the place if we are talking about of how you care your country and countrymen as well, kaya nakita ko sayo your comments is plain and simple: all is by the book and unreal to the real situation right there? I am also an OFW for two years but I will not shout of being who I am? I worked here to start concrete foundation of my Families, same to you maybe I am be proud of sometimes but still felt too hurt to hear each day on how our country will be ruled on: Rest assured however, I have to say to you that in life we have to remember some things that Gods always reminds us:
Jesus Christ claimed to answer all the deep questions about our existence. At one time or another, many of us question what life is all about. Have you ever gazed up at the stars on a pitch-black evening and wondered who put them there? Or have you ever seen a sunset and thought about life’s biggest questions:
• “Who am I?”
• “Why am I here?”
• “Where am I going after I die?”
Although other philosophers and religious leaders have offered their answers to the meaning of life, only Jesus Christ proved his credentials by rising from the dead. Skeptics like McDowell who originally scoffed at Jesus’ resurrection, have discovered that there is compelling evidence that it really occurred.
If we take his words seriously, Jesus offers life with real meaning. He said that life is much more than making money, having fun, being successful, and then ending up in a graveyard. Yet, many people still try to find meaning in fame and success, even those who have already made it to the mountaintop. Peace!

To andoybarrios....

As OFW right now I am not plan to stay longer here even I am comfortable of where I am? Maybe you and I are fortunate to have what we had and status in life but to tell you frankly, for me as a human being I am not after of who I am? But I am after of what I can? I pray for you and please we pray together as citizen of our country: This is for change, hope and peace of our nation and in the whole world Amen.
Lastly, I want to share you something that I hope anyone of us in this real world can answer the questions that challenge by God for us:
The question is? Who am I? Why am I here? And Where am I going after I die?
Peace!.....

Martial Law

Bakit?

Teddy Boy ipaliwanag mo bakit? By the way pala, Nakapunta na ako sa Sultan Kudarat, Cotabato City, Carmen, Surallah, Nourallah, Isulan, Gen. San at hindi ko na matandaan ang iba pa but this is irrelevant sa concentrate ka lang doon sa mga tanong ko.

3,000 CVOs at CAFGU a threat in Maguindanao

5

To andoybarrios...at sa lahat ng against ML in Maguindanao?

Manong andoy the main objectives of ML right there is a swift moved to disarmed all private armies in connection of the massacre and by then, if the weapons is positive of the ballistic test in connection to the crime this can be used to connect the suspects and totally can solved the case even if it is confiscated during ML gets? all of this is beyond probable cause depende kung gaano ka bigat ang ebedensya at gaano ka credible ang testimony ng mga witnesses. sana nman po huwag kayo maging paranoid at hipokrito sa usaping ito at isantabi niyo muna ang galit niyo kay Arroyo? Manong andoy huwag kang magmalaki sa alam mo sa batas na pinagsasabi mo just look at the actual situation right there and bring your book of knowledge and show me how to implement laws infront of the victims in the area of lawless land.
I dare you now subukan mong pumunta doon particularly in Maguindanao at magdala ka ng libro at isigaw ang batas na sinasabi mo kung may maniniwala ba sa iyo? subukan mong tumira doon under Ampatuan Law tingnan lang natin kung hindi ka iihi sa takot? Tingnan natin kung kaninong itlog ang pipiyok? Palibhasa ang galing niyong magsalita eh wala nman kayong ginawa? At am sure wala kayong magawa kundi ang mag-ingay? alam Manong andoy o brother andoy palaboy lahat naman tayo galit kay Gloria pero sa usaping ito sana nman tigilan niyo yang usaping pang politika? tinatanong niyo ang legalities ng ML dahil takot kayo sa technicalities eh hayaan niyo muna ang mga imbestigador sa kaso at maglahad ng mga ebedensiya bago kayo manghusga: eh kung wala kayong magawa para solusyunan ang Isla ng Mindanao particularly now in Maguindanao eh sana tumahimik nalang kayo? sa mga moslem territory bro doon ay minsan kinalimutan na ng mga ibang tao ang due process, some people were not after of what you said constitution, people right there were challenged on how to survived each day of living sa kahit anong paraan kaya huwag kayong magmalaki na may malasakit kayo sa mga tao doon dahil sa totoo lang Martial Law right there as of now is better than Ampatuan Law? Martial Law right now is totally different before during Marcos Regime and under 1935 Constitution. kaya ung mga kinatatakutan niyo ay possibe din yan mangyari pero dapat niyong tandaan that Mrs. Gloria Arroyo is one way ahead of us and now we need to moved on. Whenever Gloria is proven guilty of her mistakes let the law will prevail and the justice system will work for it? iyong mga sinisigaw niyo laban kay Gloria ay hindi solusyon sa Maguindanao ngayon at lalo na sa Massacre kya kung sa akala niyo magaling kayo punta kayo doon ngayon at subukan niyong manghuli ng private armies at mag imbestiga ng kaso gets?

TULOY LANG MARTIAL LAW

IISA LANG ANG PINANGAGALING NG OPPOSITION SA MARTIAL LAW KUNDI YONG MAY PANSARILING INTEREST. DAPAT DISARMAHAN LAHAT NG GRUPO, PRIVATE ARMIES, MNLF, MILF AT GRUPO NG ABBUSAYAP. YONG MGA PRIVATE ARMY NG AMPITUAN FAMILY NA NAGPAPAKITA NG OPPOSITION AY SUMUKO NA. HUWAG NA PO KAYONG MAGYABANG. KUNG GUSTO NG GYERA DI SUBUKAN NINYO PARA MAAGA KAYONG MAGPAALAM SA MUNDO. DAPAT IDECLARA ANG MARTIAL LAW SA BUONG MINDANAO. HINDI PO ITO KUNG TAMA O MALI. ANG KAILAGAN BIGYAN KA KAPAYAPAAN AT KAUNLARAN ANG MINDANAO. MAGAGAWA LANG KUNG ANG SUSUNOD SILA NG BATAS. NGUNIT BATAS SA MINDANAO AY KUNG SINONG MAY ARMAS. KAWAWA ANG ORDINARIONG MAMAYAN SA MINDANAO. TINGNAN NINYO ANG LAMAN NG PERIODICO SA MINDANAO. KIDNAPPING, RAPE, ARSON, BOMBING AT MURDER. ABA NAMAN MGA GINAGALANG NG MGA SENADOR KUMILOS NAMAN KAYO. ANO BA ANG SOLUTION. ANG MAGBAYO. ABA MAGRESIGN NA KAYO KUNG WALA KAYONG KAKAYAHAN.

PRIVATE ARMIES OUT OF CONTROL

I remember pre-martial law, in the ‘60s and through ’71. The private armies and their weapons, this is so reminiscent of that era. It is a step back in time.

I’m sure the government benefited from these warlords to control insurgency. But were they ever in check? I understand that you need to enlist the help of the local leaders, but should they be empowered as much? The arms used by the Ampatuans and those that were stockpiled could not have been acquired without someone high in government or military. Certainly not in the volume of what has been uncovered so far. Any government official who had helped facilitate this arms procurement must be held accountable and given jail time.

The administration failed those who were massacred in Magindanao. What other murders have happened that never get to the news? It is heart breaking, as I know in a land like the Ampatuan’s, their rule was ironclad and with impunity. This is very shameful and being in the 21st century, so backwards. This must never happen again. Often, I read about Burma, Khmer and other African countries that commit these atrocities. But please, not my country!

I wonder what private armies would the Macapagal-Arroyo clans have. There is a parallel here but only in a different scale. I am not implying that GMA would actually do what the Ampatuans did. Just that, with so much of her family entrenched in government it would be easy to circumvent what is law.

The time of the Ampatuans as rulers of Magindanao is now over. They must not get back their power as to do so is to leave the populace in their manipulating grip. Even more important is that whoever replaces them must not replicate what has happened here. The government and the military must bear the brunt of the work fighting insurgencies at all costs. There are no deals with warlords. The rule of government is first, foremost and should be the only one as it is the voice of the people.

Whatever comes of this investigation, I pity the women of the Ampatuans. Their gender will no longer render them off limits to retaliation from the aggrieved parties. Then again their male clan members should have thought of this before kidnapping, raping and killing women of their rival clan.

Bayan ko, luha ko…….

Other Private Armies

How about the strong powerful clans in Isabela, Ilocos, and Pampangga provinces? Do they or don't they have private armies as well? What's the government doing about them?
