MANILA, Philippines – A woman died after a fire hit her house in Zamboanga City Wednesday night.

Sylvia Saavedra died after being trapped inside her family’s burning house in Barangay Tugbungan at around 9 p.m.

The victim’s mother Maria Lourdes Saavedra, meanwhile, was rushed to the hospital after sustaining injuries.

According to the victim’s neighbors, the Saavedra family may have left a kitchen appliance open, while after preparing food for the arrival of a relative from the United States.

They also suspect that Sylvia was already sleeping when fire struck her house, since her body was found inside her bedroom.

The fire was declared under control after an hour.

The houses and a barangay hall surrounding the Saavedra family’s house were not affected by the blaze. – report from RJ Rosalado, ABS-CBN News Zamboanga
