Activists in Cebu say Arroyo worse than Marcos
MANILA, Philippines - Activist party-list groups in Cebu have described the administration of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo worse than the dictatorship of former president Ferdinand Marcos.
Karapatan and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) - Central Visayas together with other party-list groups held a protest Thursday to celebrate the 61st anniversary of the Universal Human Rights Declaration.
The groups also said they are continuing to call for justice for the victims of Maguindanao massacre and have the martial law declared in most parts of Maguindanao province lifted.
The groups marched from Fuente Osmeña Circle to the downtown area where they had a short program.
The group threw rotten tomatoes to a picture of President Arroyo, retired Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan, and acting National Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales among others. The group tagged them as the top violators of human rights.
Rev. Rey Gelloagan, Karapatan Central Visayas chair, said it was only during the Arroyo administration that religious leaders were killed. He said that 26 bishops and priests have been victims of extrajudicial killings.
Gelloagan said that since January 2001 to October this year, there were 1,119 victims of extrajudicial killings in the country, 24 of them are from the Central Visayas region.
The number for the Philippines does not yet include the more than 50 people killed in the Maguindanao massacre.
Gelloagan described the killings as a wholesale taking of lives. He said he believes that all these incidents are products of the government’s failure to uphold human rights.
Gelloagan also called for the lifting of the martial law declaration in Maguindanao. He said that martial law is not the way to give justice to the victims of the massacre since the problem in Maguindanao is not rebellion but warlordism.
Gelloagan asked the public to be vigilant. He said that Arroyo’s purpose for the implementation of martial law is to test the public’s patience and tolerance.
Gelloagan said he believes that the martial law declaration in Maguindanao is just Arroyo’s first step to get her plans of becoming a prime minister to become a reality.
He said that through the voting of legislators in the joint session of Congress on whether to revoke the martial law proclamation for Maguindanao is one way of testing if the president has a hold on them.

Are they serious?
Are they serious? Arroyo is worse than Marcos? How old are these activists anyway? 18, 20, 25? I know meron diyan na katulad nina Satur Ocampo na inabutan si Marcos, but proclaiming the Arroyo is worse than Marcos when it comes to Martial Law is RIDICULOUS!
For one thing, karamihan sa kanila hindi naranasan ang buhay Martial Law nung panahon ni Marcos. Maraming tao ang naghirap at nawalan ng buhay na hindi naire-report sa diyaryo, TV or radyo. Kontrolado ng gobyerno nuon ang media, and any reporter na lumaban kay Marcos KULONG ang inaabot o kung hindi naman ay pinapatay in broad daylight! There was a reporter named Yabut nuon na napakatapang at sobra kung batikusin si Marcos sa radyo nuon. Kulong ang inabot niya at nung finally pakawalan siya, biglang naging pro-Marcos. Ganun katindi ang Martial Law ni Marcos. It is vastly different sa Martial Law which is in effect ngayon a Maguindanao.
The problem with these activists, hindi mo alam kung saan ka lulugar. May gawing mali ang gobyerno, RALLY sila. May gawing tama ang gobyerno, KULANG sa kanila kaya RALLY na naman. Hindi sila marunong masiyahan. At napakahilig pa sa conspiracy theories ng mga ito. How many times have we heard yung mga doomsday predictions nila? May nagkatotoo ba kahit isa? Wala. Hindi sila nakakatulong sa pag-rally nila dahil tinatakot nila ang mga investors na nandito sa Pilipinas. Sumisigaw sila ng TRABAHO. Sumisigaw sila ng PAGKAIN. Ang dami nilang hinihingi sa gobyerno. Pero kung magsisilikas ang mga investors palabas ng bansa, walang TRABAHO at walang PAGKAIN. Tapos sisisihin nila ang gobyerno.
Point taken kung walang aktibista, hindi matatanggal si Marcos at si Erap. Pero huwag namang abusuhin. Hindi na sila nakakatulong.
Batikusin kung mali ang ginagawa, purihin kung tama ang ginagawa. Tigilan ang mga haka-haka. Walang buti itong magagawa sa ating bansa.
Aktive!!
Ang kong totoo kayong aktivista na may pagmamalasakit sa bansa,maging against kayo sa katiwalaan sa ibang paraan,huwag magkalat sa kalsada at maghapon sa lansangan!!magtrabaho nalang kayo may makakain pa kayo,karamihan kasi sa mga nagrarali walang hanap buhay kong saan nalang pinulot ni Satur ang mgayan at binayaran ng konting halaga kaya ayan nandyan cila sa kalsada.Mahirap na nga,pinagbibili pa ang pagkatao nila at prinsipyo,kaya ayan walang asenso,pati mga anak ng mgayan magmana din sa kanila kasi walang alam na ituro kong di mag Macho,at tamad pa.Kaya sila nagsasamantala sa iabot ng Politiko at sinasamantala din ng Politiko,ang mga ito parepareho silang salot sa ating bansa,kaya ingat sa pagpili ng ibubuto!!
Aktibista
In fairness lang sa mga aktibista. Kung walang mga aktibista hindi mapapalayas ang mga Marcos at si Erap sa kanilang mga puwesto. OO, People Power ang sasabihin niyo pero kung hindi tuloy tuloy na nag-iingay ang mga aktibista at minumulat ang publiko hindi magti-trigger ng malaking pagaklas. Kaya nagiging informed ang public ay dahil may mga naglalakas ng loob na magsalita laban sa mga katiwalian na nangyayari na noon pa at hanggang ngayon. Ang ipinaglalaban ng mga aktibista ay hindi para sa kanilang mga sarili kung hindi para sa buong pilipino. Ang karamihan sa mga lider natin sa gobyerno ay makasarili at dahil diyan ay nagiging corrupt sila. At ang korapsyon ay matagal ng kalawang na matagal ng sinisira ang bayang pilipinas.
