Pacquiao confirms plan to run for Sarangani, not QC
People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao has confirmed that he will be again gunning for a congressional post in the 2010 elections.
However, it will not be for Quezon City as earlier reported but for the province of Sarangani.
“Yes, plano kong tumakbo sa 2010. Sarangani ang gusto ko,” said Pacquiao, who will be running under the People’s Champ Movement (PCM).
The celebrated Filipino boxer, who has just beaten 10-time world boxing champ Oscar de la Hoya, went to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Kiamba Monday to have himself registered as a voter in Sarangani.
"Preparasyon ito para sa 2010," he said.
He was accompanied to the Comelec office by party-mate and former Malungon vice-mayor Bong Bong Constantino amid the mobbing of his fans in Sarangani who wanted to catch a glimpse of their boxing hero.
Pacquiao said he remains clueless about his possible rivals in Sarangani province as the incumbent Rep. Edwin Chiongbian is already serving his third and final term.
He added that there would not be any conflict with his boxing career since he plans to hang his gloves by the end of 2009.
Quezon City 2nd district Rep. Annie Rosa Susano earlier said she offered Pacquiao to run for the seat she will vacate in 2010.
Susano said she made the offer a week before the boxer left for training for the “Dream Match” fight with Oscar de la Hoya.
The QC representative offered her Novaliches residence to Pacquiao so the boxing champ can establish residence in the district.
Susano said the 29-year-old General Santos native will be endorsed by Lakas-CMD and Kampi.
She said that although the boxer will make his final decision when he comes back from the US, he is likely inclined to accept the offer.
Pacquiao is a known ally of President Arroyo and is also member of the administration's Kabalikat ng Mamamayang Pilipino (Kampi) party. He also has former Manila Mayor and now Environment Secretary Lito Atienza as a "political adviser". With a report from Chat Ansagay, ABS-CBN News SOKSARGEN
