Former kidnap victims worry over Basilan jailbreak
MANILA, Philippines - Former kidnap victims have expressed their worry after learning of the massive jailbreak in Basilan provincial jail last Sunday dawn.
Father Angel Calvo, who was instrumental in the release of 2 abducted workers of a non-government organization last year, said that 1 of them told him of the escape of 1 of her abductors.
Esperanzita Hupida of the Nagdilaab Foundation informed Calvo of the escape from Basilan Provincial Jail of Kamsa Limaya. She said Limaya was one of those who kidnapped her.
The escape of the detainees in the provincial jail, said Calvo, also made other victims of previous kidnappings, aside from Hupida, feel insecure all over again.
“They may ask about justice, why it happened, why is it not being confronted, why it is not being solved. The jailbreak proved other efforts to bring to justice those responsible become futile,” he said.
Among those who escaped from Basilan Provincial Jail were 14 other alleged Abu Sayyaf members who have pending murder and illegal detention cases at a Basilan court.
31 inmates bolted from the provincial jail Sunday dawn, killing 3 people, including a jail guard and 2 gunmen. The outsiders bored a hole at the back portion of the facility while another group fired upon the entrance of the jail.
On Monday, one escapee was killed while another one was recaptured in a combined operation by government troops and policemen. Efforts are still being made to recapture the 29 others.
