Police show alleged machine gun of Andal Jr. used in massacre
MANILA, Philippines - Police on Wednesday showed off to media the machine guns, mortars, armored carriers allegedly recovered from weapons and ammunition caches purportedly of the Ampatuans in separate sites in Maguindanao province.
One of those displayed in the grounds of Camp Tambler, Police Region Office-12 (PRO-12) headquarters in General Santos City, was a K3 “Minimi-type” light machine gun.
The machine gun was purportedly used by Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. to kill some of the victims in the gruesome massacre in Ampatuan town last November 23 which claimed the lives of at least 57 people from a rival clan and also journalists and lawyers.
Philippine National Police Chief Director General Jesus Verzosa, in a press conference, said a sworn statement from a witness said that Andal Jr. used the light machine gun.
Verzosa said that they are waiting for the results of a ballistic test to determine if the gun was used in the masssacre.
The machine gun was allegedly recovered in the vicinity of a mansion of former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. Tuesday.
Before the gun was recovered, a short firefight reportedly occurred between police and an armed group. During the clearing operation after the brief encounter, the gun was reportedly found.
Verzosa also inspected the high-powered weaponry allegedly recovered from the Ampatuans which are part of the evidence held by PRO-12. Displayed aside from the K3 light machine gun include heavy and light machine guns, mortars, a Barrett .50 caliber sniper rifle and armored carriers.
Verzosa said that the assorted weapons of different calibers seemed to show that the Ampatuans were building their own private armed force. He said the Ampatuans should explain where the weaponry came from.
Verzosa also gave awards and recognitions to policemen who were the first to respond to the massacre and succeeding incidents in Maguindanao.
The National Police chief also vowed that the police force would not relent until those responsible for the gruesome massacre are punished.
Andal Jr. has been tagged as the principal suspect in the massacre. He was arrested and is currently detained at the National Bureau of Investigation jail in Manila.
Andal Sr. and other members of the powerful Maguindanao clan including Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan, have also been arrested and included as respondents in the multiple murder case in connection with the massacre. They have also been charged with rebellion.
