Iligan City placed under state of calamity
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - Iligan City has been declared under a state of calamity due to widespread flooding that killed at least 40 people on Saturday.
Iligan Mayor Lawrence Cruz said over a dozen villages in the city were swamped by rampaging floodwaters brought about by tropical storm "Sendong."
He said at least 40 people died in the flooding, while about 200 others remained unaccounted for.
In a report to President Aquino, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Executive Director Benito Ramos said that government and local fisherfolk have joined forces in locating the reported missing people.
"Overall total, 260 reported missing in Iligan City and the Philippine Navy and Philippine Coast Guard and pamalakaya from the local fisherfolk joining togerther in looking for these missing people..." Ramos said. - Reports from ANC and dzMM
