(Update) Bomb found in Iligan bakery
Authorities found another improvised explosive in a bakery in Iligan City Friday, a day after two deadly bomb explosions rocked two upscale malls in the city.
Explosives were found at the Delecta Bread Shop in Iligan at around 4 p.m. Friday. The bakery is across Jerry's Bargain Center, one of the targets of Thursday's bombings.
The bomb was placed inside a papaya fruit placed underneath a table inside the shop, and was noticed by a waiter who immediately reported the incident.
Josephine Magalin, a vendor, said the fruit was wrapped inside a cellophane and netbag.
The Explosived and Ordnance Division of the Army and the Iligan K-9 team immediately responded to the scene.
Because of the weight of the bomb-laden fruit they had to use a water disruptor to reveal the 81MM bomb and watch inside the fruit.
The bomb was quickly recovered and did not explode.
The Army EOD and K-9 teams also inspected the PLDT-Maratel office in the city for another possible bomb, but was found out to be a defective icom radio.
Iligan police are still on high alert after Thursday's bombings that killed two people and injured 53 others.
First hit by the bombing attack was the Uni-City Department Store. The explosion took place at the mall’s baggage counter at around 1:30 p.m.
A closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed two men wearing tableeg (Arab gown) approaching the baggage area. The two left a package before leaving the counter around 1:24 p.m.
The blast took place seven minutes after they left the baggage area.
Minutes after the first blast, a second explosion ripped through Jerry Shoppers Plaza.
The government has blamed hardline Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Muslim separatist rebels for the attacks.
However, MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu denied that the 12,000-member guerrilla group was involved in the bombings.
"We express our sympathy to the families of the victims. There must be a thorough investigation before blaming any groups like us," Kabalu told reporters.
Iligan is a city of 300,000 on the north coast of Mindanao island, where Muslim separatists have been waging a decades-long guerrilla campaign and have been suspected of harboring militants with ties to Al-Qaeda. With a report from Ronnie Enderes, ABS-CBN Iligan
