MANILA, Philippines - As the number of evacuees displaced by the impending eruption of Mayon Volcano increases, evacuees are also facing more health risks, prompting the provincial government of Albay to closely monitor evacuation centers' conditions.

Four cases of sore eyes were recorded among evacuees at the Tabaco National High School in Tabaco City, aside from the usual colds experienced by other children.

Other evacuees who were housed in the room with the patients said they are worried they might also be infected with sore eyes, especially because they are using only a blanket to divide the room among families.

Provincial health officials said the patients have already received proper medical attention.

They have also adviced health workers assigned to the said evacuation center to have an isolation room so that patients will be separated from other people.

Albay Governor Joey Salceda has advised provincial health officials to maintain round-the-clock health stations inside the evacuation centers.

As of last count Sunday by the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), a total of 8,637 families, or 40,991 individuals, are now staying at 24 evacuation centers in the province.

The number is still seen to increase as evacuation continues.

The NDCC said that a total of 9,946 families or 47,285 persons have to be evacuated in the new 8-kilometer danger zone after Alert Level 4 was raised Sunday afternoon. With a report from Erick Baldo, ABS-CBN Legazpi
