MANILA - Student leaders from Makati City will "run" the country's premiere financial hub for a day on Friday, as part of the city's observance of Boys and Girls Week 2009.
In a statement, the Makati City government announced that 31 students from the city's public and private high schools will have the chance to become "government officials" for a day, assuming the position of mayor and other key city officials.
"The students – selected based on their leadership capabilities and academic performance – will elect among themselves the City Mayor, Vice Mayor, City Councilors, and heads of the city’s departments on October 28. The “candidates” for the various posts will be given the chance to present their respective platforms to their peers," the statement said.
They will "hold office" on Friday, after which they will receive special awards from the real city mayor, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay.
Binay said the yearly project of the city’s Museum and Cultural Affairs Office (MCAO) seeks to instill the value of leadership and service among the city’s youth.
During their 1-day “tenure,” the youth leaders will hold office at their respective assignments, get acquainted with the duties and functions of the particular city official they represent, and interact with city officials and clients.
“We do hope that after this experience, these young leaders will be inspired to envision themselves in public service after their graduation,” Binay was quoted as saying.
The youth officials will also attend a seminar on various youth-related issues.
The youth leaders are: Patricia Isabel Sotto and Patricia Marie Lusica, Assumption College; Edbert Jay Armocilla and Dianne Virata, Bangkal High School; Ahmelia Ahmed Alrashdi and Leah Rojo, Benigno Aquino High School; Patricia Ann Gascon and Marriele Valenzuela, Colegio de Santa Rosa; Earl Aldrin Burgos and Allan Arthur Cabrera, Colegio San Agustin; Joseph Allen Argosino, Don Bosco Technical Institute; Ray John Alentajan and Jomil Bryan Serna, Fort Bonifacio High School; Rochelle Caparas and Ma.
