'JBC vetting process not totally secret'
MANILA, Philippines - A member of the Judicial and Bar Council clarified Tuesday the selection of nominees for the next chief justice is not totally shrouded in secrecy.
Atty. Maria Milagros Fernan-Cayosa, representative of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, said the public is usually invited to watch the JBC’s interviews with the potential nominees.
“After the names are published, the next step is to conduct panel interview. This panel interview is done in public. The public is invited to attend the panel interview and submit opposition or what they feel are grounds to disqualify an applicant,” she told ANC.
She said there have been requests to televise the interviews but said the JBC has yet to amend its rules to allow live broadcast.
