Canada's bet to Miss World also a 'kapamilya'
VANCOUVER - A Filipino was chosen to represent Canada in the Miss World beauty pageant in London in November.
Filipina-Canadian Riza Santos beat 22 other candidates when she was crowned Miss World Canada last May.
A Calgary native, Santos recently visited Vancouver to take part in the summer celebration of the Filipino community. She shared with Balitang America her experience in winning the crown.
“Lots and lots of appearances, lots and lots of rehearsals, lots and lots of late nights, early mornings, but it was worth it. It was a lot of fun. I made lots of friends. Great experience all over," she said.
Santos, however, is not new to the limelight. She joined Miss Earth in the Philippines in 2006 and was a contestant for the celebrity edition of ABS-CBN's Pinoy Big Brother where she was first runner up.
She also appeared on several kapamilya shows and teleseryes and did a movie, "Double Trouble", with Vic Sotto and comedy king Dolphy.
She is overwhelmed with the continuing support of kababayans not just in the Philippines but even in Canada.
“It’s just been such an honor. I felt the support from the Filipino community from Day 1, even before I moved to the Philippines and was an artista. And even coming back here I feel that I have a lot of support and still quite a bit of following. Mostly the support I find is just the most amazing and I appreciate it so much,” she said.
Santos returned to Canada in 2009 and is currently finishing an engineering degree at the University of Calgary.
While she's busy preparing herself for the pageant in November, Santos said she is not worried. Kababayans can help support Santos by visiting her website and Facebook page online.
