DFA confirms release of 5 kidnapped Pinoys in Nigeria

Five Filipino seamen kidnapped in Nigeria's Niger Delta last October 4 have been released by their captors after four days in captivity, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed Monday.

DFA Undersecretary Esteban Conejos said the five seamen of the MT Aveiro are "well and unharmed" after their ordeal. The five are Capt. Vicente Echavez Jr., C/O Russel Fernandez, C/E Ernesto Mandane, A/B Roel Jaboni and A/B Efren Sayre.

Earlier reports said armed men attacked their vessel between Port Harcourt and Bonny oil terminal in Nigeria.

The five are now in the care of the team from Philippine Embassy in Abuja.

Conejos expressed the gratitude of the Phiippine government to the Nigerian government for the speedy resolution of the case.
