DFA to help Pinoy family facing deportation in Japan
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday announced it will extend all assistance to a Filipino family in an immigration row in Japan.
Esteban Conejos Jr., DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs said the department is "closely monitoring the case of the Calderon family."
“The Philippine embassy in Tokyo is in touch with the family on the matter of their residency status,” Conejos said in a text message to abs-cbnNEWS.com.
Conejos added that the DFA and other concerned agencies are prepared to give the Calderon family humanitarian and other assistance including their reintegration into Philippine society, “contingent on the results of the proceedings underway in Japan with respect to that country’s implementation of its laws.”
Last Monday, Agence France-Presse reported that Japan had detained the father, Arlan Cruz Calderon and threatened to deport him and his family back to the Philippines.
The Calderon couple entered Japan almost 17 years ago with the use of false passports. Facing deportation, the couple pleaded to be allowed to remain in Japan so that their Japan-born daughter can finish her schooling.
The report stated that the Japanese government is allowing the 13-year-old daughter to stay in Japan alone. -- With reports from Agence France-Presse
