Aquino-Roxas tandem leads mock poll in UAE
Filipino workers in the UAE had an early glimpse of voting in the upcoming Philippine national elections in a mock poll conducted by the San Beda Alumni Association in the UAE.
The final tally of the random survey on 123 respondents showed Liberal Party standard-bearers Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II garnering the most number of votes in the presidential and vice presidential posts.
Aquino got 68 votes while administration party candidate Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro and Nacionalista Party's Sen. Manuel “Manny” Villar, Jr. garnered 20 votes apiece. Sen. Richard “Dick” Gordon had 10 votes while former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada only got 2 votes.
In the vice presidential post, Roxas garnered 75 votes. Bayani Fernando came in second with 18 votes while Jejomar Binay got 13. Sen. Loren Legarda and Edu Manzano had 6 votes each.
In the senatorial race, the top 12 aspirants were Sen. Pia Cayetano (82 votes), Ralph Recto (70 votes), Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago (64 votes), Bongbong Marcos (62 votes), Franklin Drilon (61 votes), Serge Osmeña (60 votes), Gilbert Remulla (51 votes), Sonia Roco (49 votes), TG Guingona (46 votes), Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile (39 votes), Sen. Jinggoy Estrada (38 votes) and Joey de Venecia (37 votes).
Other senatorial aspirants with double-digit figures were Mon Mon Mitra (36), Tito Sotto (36), Sen. Bong Revilla (35), Kit Tatad (33), Toots Ople (32), Promdi Osmeña (29), Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel (24), Satur Ocampo (21), Gen. Danny Lim (19), Pinoy Lacson (17), Rey Langit (17), Jun Lozada (12), Gwen Pimentel (12), Col. Ariel Querubin (12), Adel Tamano (12), Sen. Lito Lapid (10) and Liza Maza (10).
Nonpartisan poll
San Beda Alumni Association President Ares Gutierrez said their group came up with the idea of conducting a mock poll since no election surveys were being done among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the UAE.
The mock poll was conducted in Dubai and other parts of the UAE where sample ballots were used and were distributed in different offices and establishments where Filipinos work.
“We've come up with this activity to blaze the trail, so to speak. Considering that San Beda has no alumnus/alumna running for the top two positions, our alma mater is in a way considered nonpartisan, compared to UP, La Salle and Ateneo,” Gutierrez said.
He added that the activity “also serves to educate us on who are the candidates running for office and is hoped to guide us in making our choices as OAVs (overseas absentee voters).”
But results of the mock poll may not translate into actual votes in the coming elections as the tally also revealed that 70% of the respondents turned out to be not registered in the Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV) which will start a month ahead of the May 10 elections.
From the 30% of respondents who said they are registered voters, it was not certain and was not asked in the survey whether they will actually participate in the upcoming polls.
During past elections, only about 10% of qualified OFWs registered in the OAV. Of that 10% who registered, only about 10% showed up on Election Day.

The Best Thing To Think About
I hope for those Filipinos who are really aiming for a true change. Kababayan, we have to vote for the true people.
Sa mga kandidato, sa panahon ng eleksyon, kay daming nagbabalatkayo, mga plastic, mga nagkukunwaring sincere maglingkod ng tapat.
Madali lang malaman kung sino sa kanila ang gagawa ng matino, sa output dapat sila hatulan. Kung ano ang gawa nila kapag walang eleksyon ay iyon ang gagawin din nila malamang kapag naupo na.
Sa output ang ating timbangin, kung negative output, o positive output o walang output as in bokya ang kandidato sa gawa nya.
Sana po ay magising tayo sa nararapat timbangin. Ang kasikatan ay nakakabulag, ang pera ay nakakabulag, ngunit kung ayaw natin sa dilim, tayo mismo, isa isa, dadami rin tayo at mananaig, matatalo natin ang nambubulag, tayo ay makakaahon, basta magkaisa sa kandidatong output winner, totoong tao, totoong public servant.. Hindi lang tuwing eleksyon..
