Supporters of defeated British boxing star Ricky Hatton in London were still in disbelief after their idol lost so quickly to No.1 pound-for-pound Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao.

“It's insane, absolutely insane, I can't believe he lost,” a lady British fan told ABS-CBN News.

“I genuinely thought he was gonna do it. I still don't believe now that he is knocked out,” said another of Hatton’s fans.

Despite the unfortunate outcome for Hatton, his fans did not discount Pacquiao’s boxing skills. The Britons could not help but talk about Manny’s strong punches.

More than a thousand Hatton fans filled one of London’s largest pubs to watch the “Battle of East and West.”

They danced and chanted for Hatton while waiting for the bout that started at 4 a.m. in London.

As the fight approached, British and Filipino boxing fans in the pub started trading barbs. The exchange of insults almost led to brawling.

An ambulance even picked up two Britons, but the cause of their fight was not determined.

Since they were in Hatton’s territory, Pacquiao’s fans were outnumbered in the pub. But that did not deter them from defending their “Pambansang Kamao (National Fist).”

One of them is Donna, a nurse, who went straight to the pub after work. “Galing pa ako sa trabaho, pagod na ako. Pero kahit mag-offer sila ng double time, triple time, I won’t take it.”

Other Filipinos in London, meantime, chose to watch the Pacquiao-Hatton fight through pay-per-view television because they know that scuffles often take place in bars.

“Pag nanalo si Pacquiao, mumurahin kami ng mga puti, eh mga lasing na ‘yong mga iyon,” said Eddie Montemayor.

When the fight started, the Britons were rowdy and overexcited. But whenever Pacquiao scored points, it was the Filipinos’ turn to proclaim their jubilation. With a report from Rose Eclarinal, ABS-CBN News Europe Bureau
