Pinoy among passengers of missing Air France jet
A Filipino was among the 228 people on board a missing commercial plane that probably crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, the Department of Foreign Affairs reported Tuesday.
In a press statement posted on its website, the DFA said that the Philippine Embassy in Brasilia has confirmed that a Filipino was among the listed passengers of Air France flight 447.
“Charge d’Affaires, Christopher Montero reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Embassy immediately contacted the Air France office in Brazil and was advised that only the nationalities of passengers are available at this time,” the DFA said.
The DFA added that the French Embassy in Brasilia assured Philippine Embassy officials that the complete identity of the Filipino passenger will be provided as soon as it is ascertained.
Charge d’Affaires Montero said Brazil’s military and aviation authorities have sent search and rescue teams near the island of Fernando de Noronha, about 1,500 miles east of Rio de Janeiro, but have yet to find the plane and its passengers.
Agence France Presse reported that Air France was carrying 80 Brazilians, 73 French, 18 Germans, nine Italians, six US citizens, five Chinese, four Hungarians, two Spaniards, two Britons, two Moroccans and two Irish.
Aside from the Philippines, there was also one passenger each from Angola, Argentina, Belgium, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.
Air France said that the passengers were 126 men, 82 women, seven children and a baby. The crew was made up of 12 members: nine cabin crew and the three-person cockpit crew, it added.
Reports said Air France took off from Rio at 7:29 p.m. local time (2229 GMT) for the 11-hour voyage to Paris. It disappeared four hours into the flight.
