Authorities are now conducting an investigation against a Filipina caregiver in connection with the death of her 90-year-old ward in Discovery Bay, California, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau reported.
ABS-CBN North America News Bureau correspondent Henni Espinosa reported that Laarni Dime was arrested on suspicion of two counts of elder abuse and booked into the Contra Costa Jail. Her bail was set at US100,000 but could not make bail because of an immigration hold.
“She was released Wednesday morning. What we’re doing at this point is releasing her pending further investigation," said Jimmy Lee, Spokesman of the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office.
Dime has only been a live-in caregiver for couple George and Shirley Brim, 85 for only a few months.
“We know it was very hot inside that house. Outside during the day in Discovery Bay about 106 degrees,” Lee said.
Dime called the police for help when George was found dead in his bedroom. His wife was taken to a hospital for heat-related illness.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials said that Dime is in the US illegally and is in removal proceedings.
Meanwhile, the couple’s neighbors are still shaken by the unfortunate incident.
“It was pretty hot if all the windows were close I imagine it can really get hot in the house. They seemed like nice people,” said neighbor Anthony Boler.
Detectives continue to interview neighbors and are now investigating whether the air conditioner was functional. With Balitang America
