The Igorot Austria, the only Filipino indigenous group in Austria presented a wide array of traditional, colorful and meaningful Igorot rituals, dances and ceremonies during its cultural Night and Induction Program held in Vienna’s 15th District.
Both Austrians and Filipinos in the audience were delighted with their unique presentation, having shown their rich Igorot culture. Dressed in beautiful hand woven vests, G-strings and colorful skirts, the fun loving Cordillerans of Austria, together with their children danced to the melodic sounds of the gongs, gansa and solibao.
The artistic dance performances of the Igorot youth proved to be eye catchers as well.
Christina Malawi, one of the Igorot youth who presented a typical Igorot dance is very proud to affirm her Igorot roots.
“My father is from Sagada. He is from Benguet. This makes me proud to be an Igorot. Gusto ko rin pong ipakita at ibahagi sa mga kababayan natin dito ang Igorot identity and the indigenous traditions of our forefathers.” (I want to show and share with to my fellow Filipinos here in Austria our Igorot identity and the indigenous traditions o our forefathers.)
Mrs. Cristabel Bounggick, President of the Igorot Organization in Austria is likewise very proud to contend that IGO-Austria’s solidarity is intact.
"Although few in numbers, everybody showed their utmost cooperation, each of us contributed in our own little way to the success of the event,” Bounggick said.
One Austrian guest commented: “Their dances and rituals are very much in harmony with nature. There can be little doubt that the rest of the Filipinos in Austria and also my fellow Austrians could draw much inspiration and learn many lessons from the Igorot.”
Consul Robert Ferrer of the Philippine Embassy here commended that Igorots in Austria for preserving their identity, thus remain true to their rich cultural roots, a heritage that emphasizes caring, resilience, creativity, dedication to civic duty and profound sense of community.
Igorot Austria was founded in October 1999. The organization is also a part of the Global Igorot Council. The Council meets regularly to consult on issues, interest and concerns that are generally common to Igorot.
