The Filipino community in Liverpool, England recently organized a fund-raising campaign for the repatriation of a very sick Filipina nurse.
Liezel Tobias has been brain dead for more than a year and is confined at a private nursing home in Liverpool. Her condition has not improved despite four major operations.
Through a song-and-dance concert, whose participants included Madonna Decena of Britain’s Got Talent, concerned Filipinos were able to raise 3,200 pounds or P300,000.
However, the amount was still 11,800 pounds short as a wheelchair-bound passenger like Tobias would require six seats in a plane. Thus expenses would reach 15,000 pounds or P1.5 million.
With his visa set to expire by the end of October, Tobias’s husband Daniel is still hoping that his wife’s condition would improve in the Philippines.
Daniel has appealed for help from Vice President Noli de Castro and Senate President Manuel Villar. He is also counting on the cash pledge from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administrations.
