Pinoys in Canada help victims of Ondoy
CANADA - Loonies and Toonies go a long way to help victims of typhoon Ondoy in the Philippines.
This is what Filipinos all over Canada are realizing as they donate what they can for those affected by the recent floods in Manila.
In Calgary, posters on how to help Ondoy victims are scattered all over Filipino stores and restaurants.
Remittance centers have waived fees for those sending donations to the Philippines and collections to help typhoon victims back home are quickly filling up.
The Filipino Channel (TFC) Canada and the cast of Star Cinema's "In My Life" have also used the last leg of their movie's screening in Calgary and Toronto to call for more help for victims of Ondoy.
A minute of silence was held to pray for typhoon victims and donation booths were set up outside the theaters.
Batangenos in Calgary personally donated a check to Gov. Vilma Santos for typhoon victims in her province.
The Canadian government also announced a faster immigration process for those affected by typhoon Ondoy in the Philippines specifically those who have pending sponsorship by citizens and permanent residents in Canada.
Immigration Minister John Kenney said their goal is to reunite families and the visa office in Manila will prioritize those identified as severely affected by the floods.
Applicants should call citizenship and immigration Canada's call center for more information.
New sponsorship applications meanwhile should put "Philippines" on their mailing envelope.
Canada is home to 500,000 Filipino immigrants and their families.
