Thirty-one crewmen, most of them Filipinos, were rescued moments before their 35,000-ton vessel was destroyed by a Force 8 gale in the Strait of Gibraltar on Friday, an online news report said Sunday.
The Daily Mail's online edition said the Liberian-registered vessel Fedra smashed against the rocks in the Strait as it dragged anchor.
Rescuers first attempted to airlift five men from the vessel but bad weather hampered operations.
Operations went on through the night on Friday and by early morning Saturday, 11 men were left behind as the storm increased its tempo.
"We thought we were going to lose them," the transport and maritime news portal Lloyd's List quoted one rescuer as saying.
The unidentified rescuer added that they were fortunate to have a small weather window around 7 a.m., thus paving the way for the complete rescue of the crew.
The sailors are mostly from the Philippines, the report said, without identifying them.
It added that the crew were first treated at a local hospital before being released and taken to a hotel.
