Pinoys in Austria chip in to help storm victims
VIENNA, Austria - Filipino groups in Austria continue to send assistance to the victims of tropical storms "Ondoy" and "Pepeng" in the Philippines.
"It is very inspiring to see our fellow Filipinos here in Austria uniting for a common cause. We have been receiving donations in cash and in kinds just to help our distressed kababayans in our homeland," Cristabel Bounggick, President of the Igorot Organization in Austria, said.
"We will be conducting a Grand Cañao, and the proceeds of the event will be donated to the victims of the calamity in the Cordillera region," Bounggick added.
The Igorot Organization in Austria is one of the many Pinoy organizations that are collecting boxes of clothes and canned goods to be sent to the Philippines. Local door-to-door box companies are also joining the campaign.
"It is but proper to lend a helping hand to our needy 'kababayans'. Our company supports the campaigns of our benevolent friends here in Vienna. Kung ang ipapadalang mga karton ay para sa mga nasalanta ng bagyo, our company will not charge them. We will send the boxes for free," a Pinoy door-to-door manager, who did not want to be identified, told ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau.
Three other door-to-door companies are providing free shipment of relief goods for the typhoon victims.
A group of nurses and charity-oriented Filipinos likewise formed a committee to head the first-ever big charity event in Vienna, dubbed as “Unity for a Cause”.
Lolit Kaszuba planned the big event scheduled on November 15, 2009.
This event, "Unity for a Cause," will involve all the Filipino community in Vienna, and we hope to solicit enough financial donations which we will eventually transfer to the Sagip Kapamilya of the ABS-CBN Foundation,” Kaszuba said.
“We hope that we could gather also known Pinoy artists in Austria, who could help us promote this cause. Dinner, entertainment and Ballroom Dance are the main parts of this big event," Kaszuba explained.
The Philippine embassy here in turn thanked the Filipino community for responding to the needs of typhoon victims.
