MANITOBA, Canada - A Filipino-Canadian was recently appointed as one of the ministers under the Cabinet of new Premier, Greg Selinger.

Flor Marcelino, a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, was appointed as the new Minister for Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Multiculturalism.

The news about Marcelino’s appointment, which was carried by Canada’s news providers, was cheered by the Filipino community.

In 2007, Hermie Garcia of The Philippine Reporter reported that Marcelino was the "first woman of color to be elected to Manitoba's provincial parliament."

Prior to joining public office, Marcelino who hails from Lucena City, was the editor of Winnipeg-based newspaper, The Philippine Times.

Filipino-Canadian joins Manitoba Cabinet

It is ok just to use Filipino instead of the Hyphenated "Filipino-Canadian as it is already understood that anyone who holds elected office in Canada should be a Canadian Citizen...we have worked so hard to be equal and have tried so hard to promote Multiculturalism, that we can call each other by or Original nationality without being a hyphenated National or Canadian...A Canadian is a Canadian, no more, no Less, equal to his or her fellow Canadian...so it is ok just to say Filipino MPP Joins Manitoba Cabinet..that is just as good or better.

congratz!

it's inspiring to read reports such as this. good luck, ms flor marcelino!
