Two Filipino seafarers held hostage by pirates in Somalia for two months are set to be repatriated after they were released by the hijackers over the weekend.

Undersecretary Esteban Conejos Jr., head of the Office of the Migrant Workers Affairs, said First Engineer Israel Lumpas, 26, of Tacloban City and Third Engineer Ernesto Cuartero, 58 of Las Piñas City will go back to the Philippines following their release last Sunday.

“The Philippine Embassy in New Delhi has been instructed to facilitate the repatriation of the two,” Conejos said in a text message.

Conejos said the two were on board a Japanese-owned, India-operated cargo ship M/T Stolt Valor that was hijacked by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden on September 15. Somali pirates later freed the cargo ship on Sunday, November 16.

Conejos said the ship is now en route to Mumbai, India.

Aside from the two Filipino seafarers, the cargo ship had 22 crewmen on board. “All crew members were reported safe and in good condition,” he said.

The Philippine government on Monday called for heightened security in waters off Somalia where 90 Filipino seafarers were being held captive by pirates in separate hijacking incidents. In the latest hijacking, pirates seized the Japanese-owned Chemstar Venus with 23 crew, 18 of whom are Filipinos, on Saturday.
