Filipino senior citizens are finding it easier to adjust to their new life in Australia because of a solid support group that has been helping migrants by way of teaching them skills that are useful in their daily lives.

For 81-year-old Natividad Castillo, joining the group of Filipino senior citizens called Young Generation helped her in the transition to a new culture.

Castillo left her other children in the Philippines to be with her daughter in Australia.

She is now an Australian citizen and receives $485 per fortnight (two weeks) as pension from the Australian government. Sometimes she saves a little money to send to her children back home.

Castillo said she found it easy to adjust to her new life as an Australian because the people are friendly.

"Gusto ko sa Australia kasi nakita ko peaceful saka ang mga tao mababait. Very friendly sila," Castillo said.

Her daily routine includes a little bit of cleaning, gardening, praying, reading the bible and of course, watching television.

Castillo’s social group not only provides activities and services to its members. It also teaches them new skills and talents.

Now, Castillo enjoys dinner dances and performing during multi-cultural programs as a result of lessons learned from the social group. Report from Chito Javier, ABS-CBN Australia News Bureau
