Pacquiao's not training, Roach "pissed"
LOS ANGELES—As Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach mourns the death of his younger brother, Joey, he has also set an all-points-bulletin out for the pound-for-pound king. The three-time trainer of the year hasn’t heard from Pacquiao in weeks.
“I’m a little pissed off to be honest with you [about] the lack of communication,” Roach said at his gym, the Wild Card Boxing Club. “Manny did leave a message with me about my brother, offering his condolences…That was very nice of you, but Manny, give me a call, let me talk to you. Don’t believe this is an easy fight because they are lying to you.”
With less than three months before the biggest fight of the year, Roach is wondering why his star pupil has yet to report to training. Miguel Cotto, Pacquiao’s opponent, is three weeks into his training. Roach is afraid that Pacquiao is overlooking the Puerto Rican champion.
“Anyone who thinks this fight is easy is a fool. He’s going to be at his best,” Roach said.
Roach criticized Pacquiao’s advisor Mike Koncz. He said Koncz is the reason why Manny is not in training camp.
“Maybe Mike Koncz can come up with the strategy. I don’t know. You know, I’m so pissed off with that guy. If they don’t want me to be the trainer anymore that’s fine with me, do it yourself.”
It is hard to gauge if Roach is seriously thinking about quitting, but one thing is clear, Roach is frustrated. If and when Pacquiao shows up it is going to get harder from here. Roach will have even fewer days to train with Pacquiao, since the Pacquiao-Cotto press tour is set to begin on September 10 in New York.
