OFW can still be saved if P34M blood money is raised

AL KHOBAR, Saudi Arabia – A Royal Order on the implementation of the court’s decision (qisas) to behead overseas Filipino worker Rodelio “Dondon” Lanuza has been issued.

In a letter dated April 22, the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh said it received a note verbale from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs dated April 14 informing them of the Royal Order.

Lanuza has been in jail since 2000 and was sentenced to death by beheading for allegedly killing a Saudi national.

However, the execution was put on hold after efforts were made for reconciliation, and the victim’s family and Lanuza both agreed to an amicable settlement and payment of Diyya or blood money amounting to 3 million Saudi Riyals or about P34 million.

“The desistance shall be recorded in court after the payment of the blood money to the victim’s family. The family should then execute the tanazul or the affidavit of forgiveness and desistance.

With the execution of the tanazul, manifesting that the accused has been forgiven, the case file is then sent to the Emir or Governor’s office, who will issue a release order for the accused.

But as of this date, the amount has not yet been settled.
