MANILA, Philippines – Cardinal-designate Luis Antonio Tagle is set to receive the official image of St. Pedro Calungsod in Manila on Wednesday.
Preparations are underway as some 2,000 Catholic faithfuls are expected to gather on Wednesday at the Plaza Roma, located in front of the Manila Cathedral.
Calungsod's image will be welcomed by Tagle and the attendees at 10 a.m. A mass will follow at 12 noon.
Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim said he has agreed to provide sound system, chairs, tents, ambulances and emergency staff for Wednesday's event.
Lim has also directed Manila Police District Director Chief Supt. Alex Gutierrez and traffic bureau chief Maj. Reynaldo Nava to iron out security measures and a traffic rerouting scheme.
The year 2012 is considered a remarkable one for Filipino Catholics, after the country produced its second saint and seventh cardinal.
The Wednesday mass is part of a series of visits of Calungsod's image to various places in the country.
Upon arrival from Rome last October 25, Calungsod's image was brought to the University of Santo Tomas. It also visited the dioceses of Pasig, Antipolo, Cubao, Parañaque and Novaliches.
The image then spent the All Saints' Day weekend in Camp Crame, Camp Aguinaldo and Villamor Air Base.
It is also scheduled to visit Vigan, Pangasinan, Pampanga and Malolos before returning to Manila for a mass presided by Tagle.
The caravan will also make stops in Caloocan, Imus, Lipa, Lucena, Daet, Naga, and Legaspi before a grand thanksgiving celebration in Cebu on November 30.
