MANILA – Zamboanga Mayor Beng Climaco warned residents against hoax messages spreading around about the ongoing conflict between government troops and fighters of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).
Climaco advised the public to refrain from spreading the unverified text messages to prevent panic among residents in Zamboanga.
“These text messages and online scare are part of the propaganda of the enemies of the state intended to sow terror and fear among the residents. Let us brace for more as these kinds of text messages will continue to haunt us in the coming days,” she said in a press conference on Friday.
Climaco said military forces are still conducting operations in the conflict zone, adding that Zamboanga residents should remain vigilant.
“Our land, sea and air assets are on alert and in place to maintain peace and order and to prevent any reinforcements from the rogue forces that will try to come in our city,” she said.
The curfew in Zamboanga from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. still stands, the mayor said.
She added that she has instructed local officials to suspend the issuance of Community Tax Certificates while the fighting is ongoing.
