MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – Six alleged members of a gun-for-hire group were killed in an encounter with the police in Calamba, Laguna on Monday morning.
Of the six suspects, five died immediately at the site of shootout in Barangay Lecheria at around 8:30 a.m. One of the suspects was declared dead on arrival at the J. P. Rizal Memorial Hospital.
According to to Region-4A Police Deputy Director Chief Supt. Abner Dimabuyu, police got a tip from a concerned citizen that an armed group was spotted at the house of one of the suspects in Barangay San Juan.
The police then set up a checkpoint, resulting in the shootout between the policemen and the suspects on board a brown Toyota Innova (TDI 214).
"Itong grupong ito ay responsable sa pagpatay sa kasamahan naming police na si Insp. Romeo Christe of Cabuyao PNP," said Laguna Provincial Director Sr Supt. Fausto Manzanilla.
Dimabuyu said a sketch of what seemed to be the suspects' target was also found at the site of shootout.
"This group is called JR Reyes Castillo [group], an armed group. We found a sketch and we assume that they have a target," Dimabuyu said.
Police are now investigating the sketches recovered from the suspects to determine the possible target of the group.
