MANILA, Philippines – Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer claims Mexican-American boxer Abner Mares should be ranked ahead of Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire in the pound-for-pound ratings.
Schaefer, who promotes Mares, was commenting on the possibility of a boxing match between the two highly-rated super bantamweights.
“With us, you have a willing promoter and I am happy to put up a multi-million dollar offer for Nonito Donaire to show up,” Schaefer told Boxing Scene [12].
“But I’m not so sure after this performance tonight by Abner Mares that (Donaire’s) promoter is going to be all that excited of making this fight,” he added.
Mares was coming off a 12-round unanimous decision victory over tough contender Anselmo Moreno, and immediately called out Donaire following his victory.
“I want Donaire next. I want to keep fighting the best out there,” he said.
Schaefer believes that should they ever fight, it will be Mares who will have the upper hand against Donaire.
“I really think that if you look at Abner’s resume, and you compare it with the other to super bantamweight, Nonito Donaire... and I’m not taking anything away from Nonito because he’s a terrific and exciting fighter,” Schaefer said.
“But if you really compare the strength of the opposition, and when and where Abner fought them ... All of those guys were either champions, undefeated, or with one loss at the peak of their careers,” he added.
