MANILA, Philippines – Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas on Tuesday said he already has someone in mind to replace Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Nicanor Bartolome.
Roxas told reporters that he is recommending PNP Deputy Director General Alan Purisima as the next PNP chief.
Bartolome had agreed to go on non-duty status as early as the end of November or December to give way for preparations in securing the May 2013 elections.
ABS-CBN sources say this would, in effect, put the Chief PNP on floating status and would lead to a less than honorable exit for Bartolome. However, this arrangement would allow Bartolome to receive his full retirement benefits when he retires in early 2013.
The 55-year-old Bartolome is scheduled to retire on March 16, 2013, a crucial period leading up to the May 2013 elections.
Purisima was earlier directed by Roxas to head the group tasked to monitor security for the 2013 polls. – report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
