MANILA, Philippines – Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum is willing to put together a fight between top super bantamweights Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and Abner Mares, but preaches patience for the time being.
Mares challenged Donaire, the World Boxing Organization and RING champion, after beating Panama's Anselmo Moreno last weekend.
His promoter, Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy, has said that they are willing to put a Mares-Donaire fight together as well.
In an interview with Boxing Scene , Arum appeared to be taking a “wait-and-see” approach to the fight.
“Well, one of the things is that Donaire has a fight against (Mexican brawler Jorge) Arce, so let’s see what happens in that fight,” the Top Rank boss said.
“Afterwards, we can talk, but the WBC informed us that Mares has a mandatory,” Arum added. “So you know, I’m sure that fight will happen when it’ll happen.”
Arum also emphasized that they “have no interest working with Golden Boy.”
“We will offer them a sum of money for the services of Mares, put them up as a co-promoter, but we have no interest of doing a regular co-promotion with them,” he said.
Mares was impressive in his fight against Moreno, who moved up from bantamweight to fight the Mexican. Mares won with scores of 116-110, 116-110, and 120-106, though the fight was closer than the scores indicated.
Meanwhile, Donaire is set to face Arce in what will be his fourth fight this year. He defeated top Japanese boxer Toshiaki Nishioka via a ninth round technical knockout last October.
Donaire has openly expressed his desire to face Arce, though he also admitted that the on-going cold war between Top Rank and Golden Boy may keep the fight from happening.
