CEBU, Philippines – Six houses were totally damaged while three other homes were partially damaged in a fire that occurred in Barangay Suba, Cebu City at around 7 a.m. on Saturday.
Authorities said the fire started at the second floor of the home of a certain Danilo Borres.
Residents in the area were still asleep when the fire hit.
The Borres family hurried out of their rooms and went downstairs to save themselves. They were unable to secure any of their valuables.
Dandy Borres had to return inside the house, however, after she realized that she left her dog in the first floor.
She tried to revive her pet as soon as they came out from the house but the dog died due to suffocation.
The Cebu City Bureau of Fire Prevention responded quickly but had difficulty entering the area because of narrow roads.
Firefighters were able to control the fire in a few minutes.
Borres said a night before the incident, they smelled something burning inside their house but they did not mind it. He suspects that it had something to do with the electrical wiring.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
Affected families, meanwhile, are being assisted by barangay officials.
