MANILA, Philippines - The late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo will be conferred on Monday the Quezon Service Cross Award.

According to the Official Gazette, the award is the highest recognition a Filipino can receive from the republic.

Robredo died in a plane crash last August 18.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the award will be received by Robredo's wife, Ma. Leonora, and their three daughters.

The Quezon Service Cross is unique since the President nominates individuals. The nomination must be approved by Congress, however.

Nominations for the award shall be made "only in cases where the service performed or contribution made can be measured on the scale established by the national benefaction of the late President Manuel L. Quezon."

Robredo will only be the fifth in history to receive the award. The others are: Presidents Ramon Magsaysay and Emilio Aguinaldo, Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., and Foreign Affairs Secretary Carlos Romulo.

The last time the Quezon Service Cross was conferred upon an individual was in 2004, that of the president’s father.
