MANILA, Philippines – Puerto Rican boxing star Miguel Cotto is counting on the support of the fans inside the Madison Square Garden when he fights unbeaten American Austin Trout on December 1.

Cotto is hugely popular in New York and his last fight at the Garden – against Mexico’s Antonio Margarito – was sold out.

“I’m just happy to be here again. People here have treated me great for my whole career, and I know that next Saturday, it’s going to be the same,” Cotto said in an interview with Lem Satterfield of RingTV [12].

Cotto believes the huge crowd at the Garden will work to his favor on fight night as he tries to claim Trout’s World Boxing Association light-middleweight title.

“I know what Trout says. He says that he’s been in Panama fighting with a Panamanian guy, and was in Mexico fighting with a Mexican guy,” Cotto said.

“But next Saturday, he’s going to be in New York, in Madison Square Garden, fighting with Miguel Cotto. This is my home,” he stressed.

“And I know nothing is going to be the equal or the same as anything that he’s passed through before. This is going to be special.”

Cotto has had a remarkable run at the Garden, defeating fighters like Paulie Malignaggi, Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito inside the famous venue.

But in a separate interview with RingTV [13], Trout just shrugged off Cotto’s supposed home court advantage.

“This is not my first time doing this, so I feel like I’m going to be pretty comfortable being in hostile territory,” Trout said. “Really, the crowd can only do one thing, and that’s to make noise.”

“I just have to make sure that I don’t give them anything to cheer about,” he said.
