MANILA, Philippines – A 14-year-old girl died after being crushed by a collapsed wall during a fire in Lilac Republic, Barangay West Fairview in Quezon City.
The teenager, identified as April Rose dela Rosa, had already escaped from their burning house, but decided to return with buckets of water to help put out the fire. While trying to get out again, the wall collapsed, crushing her.
“Sinubukan ko siyang hilahin, pero hindi ko na kinaya, bumagsak na ang kisame,” said Tony Mengullo, the victim’s uncle.
The fire began at the second floor of their house.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but according to the Bureau of Fire Protection, it was likely due to a candle, as there was no electricity in the house.
“May nagsasabi na kandila sa labas ang pinagmulan, pero aalamin pa natin ‘yan,” said Major Aristotle Banaga, chief of operations of the Quezon City Fire Department.
“Kasi ‘yung matanda diyan, gaser ang gamit,” said Myrna Perez, a neighbor of the victim’s. “Tapos nagsisindi ng kandila dahil nga Todos Los Santos, nagsindi sa hagdan.”
Two duplex-type houses were razed by the fire, which started around 2 a.m. Sunday. It reached the first alarm before being declared out at 2:37 a.m.
Two families were affected by the fire, and the BFP pegged the damage at around P100,000. -- Report from Kori Quinto, ABS-CBN News
