MANILA, Philippines – Hall of Fame boxing trainer Freddie Roach welcomes the idea of a showdown between his top fighter, Filipino icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, and interim World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero.
In an interview with The Boxing Channel , Roach revealed that Guerrero used to be one of Pacquiao’s sparring partners.
“He used to spar with Manny Pacquiao and he used to do really well, it was quite competitive,” Roach said. “If their sparring would be like the fight, it would be a great fight.”
Roach described the Pacquiao-Guerrero sparring session as “give-and-take” for both fighters.
“Robert, he gave some great work to Manny back in the day, but it was a long time ago,” he added.
“Would we fight him? We’re not scared of him, that’s for sure. If it makes sense, if we can do business, we have no problem,” Roach said.
Guerrero made waves when he dominated Andre Berto en route to a unanimous decision victory last November 24 in California. “The Ghost” sent Berto to the canvas in the first and second rounds, but Berto made the fight competitive in the middle rounds.
Guerrero won with scores of 116-110 across the board. After his victory, he called out unbeaten American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.
With Guerrero stepping up, Pacquiao now has more choices for his next fight, though Roach insists they are focused on Pacquiao’s December 8 clash against Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez.
“We haven’t talked about that too much in camp because we’ve got this fight coming up,” he said.
But Roach admitted that among the fighters who want to face Pacquiao, Guerrero would be his choice.
“Floyd (Mayweather) is not negotiating at all, and (Timothy) Bradley wants a rematch, but Guerrero is the more exciting fight. That’s the one I would pick,” he said.
