MANILA, Philippines – Are you looking for something to give to your loved ones who are young at heart this Christmas?
ANC’s "CityScape" recently featured two inspirational books that aim to impart lessons to its young readers.
One is the story of “a father who dreamt of leading a nation, a mother who fought for democracy and a son who realized his father's dream.”
Titled "Ninoy, Cory and Noynoy", the book features the life stories of the late Benigno Aquino Jr., his wife, former President Corazon Aquino, and their only son, President Benigno Aquino III.
Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, the eldest child of Ninoy and Cory, feels honored that someone thought of making a book about her parents.
“People tend to forget easily and many children of course weren't born at the time that we had the dictator, and when my father was assassinated, maybe you weren't even born. When my mother was president, maybe you were just a little kid, you also did not know what she went through. That's why I am so happy that this book came out,” she said.
Aquino-Cruz said the book will help the young ones always remember what her parents did for the people and the nation.
“People who don't have time to read will find this so easy to read and they can read it fast. They can tell their children about the story in a very simple way,” she said.
Abi Goy, one of the book’s illustrators, said they came up with the book to inspire young Filipinos to follow the footsteps of Ninoy, Cory and Noynoy.
“Sana it was written and illustrated in the point of view na something that they will appreciate. Hopefully it will make the kids feel what these characters felt and then follow their dreams as well,” Goy said.
Socorro Ramos' story
Meanwhile, another inspirational book is the story of Socorro Ramos, the person behind National Bookstore.
Ramos said she agreed to have her life story be turned into a children’s book so the new generation could get a glimpse of how her passion turned into a success.
“I wish I could be a good example to them na money does not come easy. You have to work hard for it. And also, you have to love your work. That's important. And you have to go to school to study because you have to earn more. If you want to earn more, you have to know more. But you have to read more,” Ramos said.
Seventy years after the famous bookstore first opened in Manila, Ramos said she feels it is high time to inspire more people by sharing what she has gone through.
