MANILA, Philippines – Former Strikeforce women’s featherweight champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos said she is open to accept Ronda Rousey’s challenge to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
However, she pointed out that the fight wouldn’t happen in UFC 157 in February 2013 as she will need more time to taper down and make the 135-pound limit.
Santos typically fights at the women’s featherweight limit of 145 pounds.
“They said I have to go down [to bantamweight], but I can not at this time. We will negotiate, but I need some time,” Santos said in Bloody Elbow .
Santos said she wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity of participating in the first women’s fight in UFC.
“The UFC is the best event in the world... I'll do my best to get this win. It's a big step and a big responsibility to keep female MMA there,” she said.
Rousey, Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion, has been repeatedly calling out Santos.
“I need to send out a challenge to Miss ‘Cy-Roid’ out there – people want to see you have the first fair fight of your life, I’m the champ now, the champ doesn’t go to you, you come to the champ. Come down to 135 and let’s settle this,” she said.
Rousey was referring to Santos’ positive drug test for steroids following her last fight in Strikeforce, which cost her the featherweight title.
