MANILA, Philippines – World super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will not be out for revenge when he takes on Mexican warrior Jorge Arce on December 15 in Houston, Texas.
Donaire was not able to watch Manny Pacquiao’s loss to Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez as he was on his way to Houston during fight time.
“Prayers to Manny that he makes a full recovery,” Donaire posted on his Facebook account after learning of the result of the fight. “And to those who are kicking him while he’s down need to stop!
“Getting knocked out ain’t a laughing matter. It takes balls to be in that ring and we all pray at the end of the day that no one gets seriously injured.”
In an interview with Boxing Scene’s Ronnie Nathanielsz, Donaire stressed that he will not be looking to avenge Pacquiao’s defeat when he battles Arce.
“I never really go for vengeance or revenge. I believe that if it helps to put our country, the Philippines, up, I will do the best that I can to win this fight in the best possible way,” he said.
Donaire also told Nathanielsz that Pacquiao’s loss was especially heartbreaking since the Pacman was “doing so well” leading up to the knockout.
Although he is disappointed about Pacquiao’s loss, Donaire is still focused on his own bout, especially as Arce is known to be a dangerous opponent.
“We are ready for the fight,” he said. “My mind and body are ready for anything.”
