MANILA, Philippines – Sports fans are counting on Manny Pacquiao to mount a dramatic comeback following his shocking knockout defeat at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez, a boxing analyst said.
Kelsey McCarson, a member of the International Boxing Research Organization and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, said fight fans, just like other sports fanatics, crave for heroes who can pull off a miracle despite the odds.
“Yes, our greatest heroes are always those who rise to the occasion, who stand and deliver, who do what must be done despite the odds, especially when it counts most and when things seem most bleak…We love resurrections,” he said in his article posted on The Sweet Science .
McCarson said fans expect the same from Pacquiao, who fell face down the canvas after walking into a vicious right hand from Marquez.
The Filipino boxer could even emulate what Rocky Balboa has done in the movies, said McCarson.
“Look no further than Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky franchise. How many times can Rocky get back up? How much more can he endure against bigger, stronger and meaner opponents?” he said. “We want our real fighters to do this, too. We want to see them rise like Rocky. We demand it.”
Several local analysts earlier said they have already seen the best of Pacquiao and that it is time for the Filipino icon to say goodbye to boxing.
Even several members of his family also want to hang his gloves.
However, Pacquiao said he is still open for a fifth match with his long time rival Marquez.
“Oo, puwede pa ako," he said shortly after his defeat. “That’s sports. You win some, you lose some. Kung ayaw mo matalo, huwag ka na lumaban.”
But McCarson said the road to redemption is never easy.
“It is a difficult thing, this resurrection. Only the bravest attempt it. Of those that do, many more fail at it. There is, in fact, certain greatness in the attempt itself, but the rarest and most celebrated triumph is for those who both attempt and achieve it. These are our heroes, our legends, our resurrections.”
