MANILA, Philippines - Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brillantes is amenable to extending the current two-day liquor ban to 4 or 5 days.

Brillantes said the ban cannot go beyond this timeframe as it will be difficult for police to implement the ban since they are already in charge of other activities such as manning checkpoints and pursuing gun ban violators.

Metro Manila Development Authority Chairman Francis Tolentino is proposing a liquor ban extension of up to 45 days. He said the extended liquor ban would lessen electoral violence and drunk driving incidents.

Brillantes is also discouraging private individuals from filing exemptions for gun ban exemptions.

He said the Comelec seldom grants exemptions unless an applicant can prove there is a serious threat to his life.
