MANILA, Philippines – A “rich prince” has offered Juan Manuel Marquez $15-million to fight South African boxer Zolani Marali in Dubai, the Mexican’s trainer, Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain, told Boxing Scene .
The unnamed prince has reportedly put together a written offer of $15-million for Marquez to fight Marali, the World Boxing Federation junior welterweight champion.
“At a function in Morelia, the president of the WBF (Howard Goldber) was telling me that a prince was interested in Juan and sent a written proposal to face Zolani Marali,” Beristain said. “It has a formal offer of $15-million to fight in Dubai.”
Marquez recently decided to not retire just yet after his greatest career victory, a sixth round knockout of Filipino rival Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao.
Despite the large offer, Beristain does not believe the fight against the South African will happen since Top Rank and Zanfer Promotions have the inside track in staging Marquez’s next fight.
“Bob Arum (of Top Rank) and Fernando Beltran (of Zanfer Promotions) have the priority,” Beristain said.
Moreover, the fight was proposed to be held in March, and Beristain said that is not possible.
“I think that is not enough time for Juan to fight, because he is usually prepared very well and he knows he can not go into a fight with little preparation,” the Mexican trainer aid. “I do not think anything will happen on that date.”
Marquez is reportedly planning to return in April, with welterweight contenders Jessie Vargas and Vyacheslav Senchenko as potential opponents.
A fifth fight against Pacquiao is possible for September.
