MANILA, Philippines – A security guard was killed in a rescue operation after he took hostage an SSS employee in Catbalogan City, Samar on Friday.
Authorities said the security guard, Patrocinio Dabucol, opened fire inside the office past 1 p.m., triggering a panic among the employees.
Some of the employees locked themselves in a room and later escaped unharmed, except for Junie Matic.
Police said Dabucol refused to release Matic, who was wounded in the incident.
After hours of negotiation, police forced their way into the office to rescue Matic.
Dabucol was killed in the operation. His wife suspects that a feud between Matic and her husband led to the incident.
Another security guard, identified only as a certain Melvin, was also hurt in the incident.
Melvin and Matic are recovering at a hospital. -- Report from Jenette Ruedas, ABS-CBN News Tacloban
