[11]QUEZON – Some residents of Atimonan, Quezon said they saw the checkpoint that was manned by cops and soldiers, but not the bloody shooting that happened there.
According to the residents, there were no signages for a checkpoint, and armed men were not wearing uniforms in the afternoon of the shooting incident.
Soldiers and policemen were already assembled in the area as early as 12 noon, and it was not clear to the residents what they were doing there.
“Akala lang naman ng mga tao doon na mayroong iche-checkpoint, na halimbawa ay may paparahin,” said barangay captain Leticia Camba of Lomotan.
Local government officials did not know either why the police set-up a checkpoint there.
They said there was no coordination and the area has never been a location for checkpoints in the past.
“Ako nga ay nagtataka kung bakit dito. Hindi nga nagkakaroon ng checkpoint dito eh,” said Atimonan Mayor Atty. Jose Mendoza.
Most of the residents could not give testimonies either because many of them were reportedly ordered by the police to go home before the shooting incident started.
“’Yung mga ibang may bahay doon ay sinabihan na huwag na munang lalabas,” said Camba.
The National Bureau of Investigation is hoping that the police and the rest of the soldiers involved in the incident will still submit their affidavits, while they are still working on the full report of the investigation. -- ANC
