MANILA, Philippines – Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson took charge in the championship rounds against top challenger John Dodson to successfully defend his UFC flyweight title for the first time in the main event of UFC on FOX 6 in Chicago Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
Johnson was rocked in the second round, but recovered well to dominate the last three rounds. The “Mighty Mouse” eventually won with scores of 48-47, 49-46 and 48-47 to take the unanimous decision.
Dodson got off to a quick start and sent Johnson to the canvas in the first round with a left counter. The challenger continued to take charge in the second round, twice putting Johnson down with powerful counter lefts.
But Johnson was able to recover, and in the third round, the champion started to take over as Dodson began to run out of gas.
Using a devastating Muay Thai clinch, Johnson landed vicious knees to the face and body of Dodson as he thoroughly dominated the fourth and fifth rounds.
"I got dazed a little bit,” Johnson said of the second round knockdowns. “But I’m in great shape, and it’s gonna happen.”
“It’s like in swimming. You’re gonna get splashed. You’re gonna get hit,” he added.
Johnson and Dodson each received $50,000 for putting on the “Fight of the Night.”
Johnson's record improved to 17-2-1, while Dodson lost for the sixth time against 14 victories.
In the co-main event, Glover Teixeira dominated former light heavyweight Quinton “Rampage” Jackson to win by unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
Meanwhile, Anthony “Showtime” Pettis solidified his position as one of the top contenders in the lightweight division with a dominant performance against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.
Pettis landed several hard strikes to Cerrone’s body, the last of which was a kick to the liver that put “Cowboy” down for good.
The fight was called off at the 2:35 mark of the first round, and Pettis was awarded a $50,000 bonus for “Knockout of the Night.”
