MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxer Abner Mares claimed that “Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire Jr. has turned down the offer for their supposed unification title bout in April.
Mares, the WBC super bantamweight champion, expressed gratitude to his promoter and his manager for reportedly trying to arrange the fight with WBO titlist Donaire.
"Unfortunately Nonito Donaire has turned down the fight against myself. I just want to thank my promoter [Golden Boy] and my manager [Espinoza Boxing] for their attempts to try and make a fight that the fans really wanted to see," the Mexican said through his official Twitter account .
Golden Boy Promotions has reportedly extended a $3-million offer to Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. to let Donaire fight Mares.
The “Filipino Flash,” however, said that his camp has yet to see a copy of the contract allegedly sent by Golden Boy.
“[Top Rank president] Todd [Duboef] didn’t receive anything, [manager Cameron] Dunkin hasn’t either. Should I check with the water boy? Maybe he has it. Games! Send a copy if it’s real,” Donaire said in a report by The Philippine Star.
“Todd duBoef has not received anything and he’s sitting at his desk....Did ya’ll send it to the water boy at Top Rank or what????” Donaire added.
